Reflections

PHOTO PROMPT © Nathan Sowers

After she left him Gaz stopped looking at himself in mirrors. He blamed his looks for her infidelity, had he been better looking she would have stayed. In the aftermath of the betrayal the house was shorn of all mirrors.

To distract him I asked him to volunteer at the children’s cancer ward. His kindness and goofy humour won the hearts of the kids. As his confidence soared Gaz reflected that he was better off without someone who could not look beyond his appearance.

But that mirror was needed back, the children had been teasing him about his uncombed look.

  1. A classic moral tale, but I liked the way you made the mirror relevant again in a new way

  2. I like the way you use the presence or absence of mirrors to tell the story of Gaz's emotional state. The re-instatement of a mirror in his house reflects his increasing confidence, and gives us hope that it won't be too long before he can find a new love.

  3. Dear Subroto,

A lovely story with a sweet moral. Looks are fleeting in any case, but the heart remains true. Well done.

Lovely story. How sad that he was ever with somebody so shallow. Handsome is as handsome does. Jilly, Sugar on the Bee.

  5. He's quite correct, he is better off. It sounds like he definitely needs a mirror back, though!

  6. A genuinely kind man needs to meet a woman of the same mindset. I hope he does get a mirror and keeps his hair combed :)

  9. I loved this line, as it sums up the change within him: "As his confidence soared Gaz reflected that he was better off without someone who could not look beyond his appearance." Enjoyed your story.

  10. May he find someone who loves him for him. Although, a good hair cut wouldn't hurt.

  11. Great use of more than one reflection. It's good to know Gaz has found purpose, and friends to point out his lack of grooming in a nice way.

  13. This may be a short story, but the sweet moral that is being received through it is a commendable compliment.
