Motherland

PHOTO PROMPT- Copyright Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

I see the ground slipping away as we ascend. Terra Firma the solid earth; firm ground, far below.

The land that shaped me, the one that tugs the heartstrings, Motherland. I see rivers, towns, and the vastness of its uninhabited stretches. I feel it within myself through the blood coursing through my veins, whispering, “we made you”.

Leaving behind a part of me, and the family ties that bind. Soon I will be soaring through the sky, the land a distant memory away. Till my destination draws near and I see the land that defines me now welcoming me home.

Initially I was going to be lazy and use an extract from this The Blue Sky but then decided to do some work instead.

Fine narrative, Sub. I like the stream of thought and am glad you weren't lazy this week.

    1. Ha! Ha! Thanks Dawn. Actually as good as David Bowie is, I think the Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield did a great cover version in outer space

Dear Subroto, Love your story and it is quite telling. I like how picking up your tent and moving somewhere, when you go to sleep the next time - you are still at home. Good job! Nan :)

This is clearly a hard parting, but the ending, knowing he will be welcomed in his new home is heartening. I liked the way you played with terra firma - injecting the narrator with a touch of fear.

    1. Thanks for your comments Sarah I am glad you liked it. The narrator was reflecting about how our identities are defined by so many influences in our lives.

    1. That is true but we are also the product of the sum total of our experiences. Thanks for reading and commenting Janna.
