“I am struggling here”, the brittle-tongued
voice sounded on the verge of tears.
“Oho!” I replied, hoping my
answer conveyed some empathy while I struggled to identify the caller.
Meanwhile on the other end of the line and emotional battle
was raging.
I heard disjointed words between the sobs.
“Holiday bawaah...”
The story coming through indicated a holiday booked online
that promised Paradise along with all the accompaniments that Paradise
entailed. And now there was trouble in Shangri–la. The island lacked modern communications. There was no mobile internet.
“I can’t even Instagram my food waaah...”.
I cut the line.

Back again at another day in Friday Fictioneer's Paradise. The photo for this week is that old communication device, the payphone. The news in Australia is that the payphone could be dead by the end of the year. I mean all you can do on that is make a phone call. Soon it will exist only in a museum.

Dear Subroto,
ReplyDeleteLife is tougher some days than others, isn't it? We don't know real hardship. Good one.
Shalom,
Rochelle
You are right. Real hardship is having dialup broadband these days. Thanks for your comments Rochelle, I am glad you liked it.
DeleteSo funny. With that last whinge I think I'd've cut the line too. Why can't people just eat food anymore? A lovely topical story.
ReplyDeleteCos food tastes better with Instagram. Thanks for your comments Sarah, I am glad you liked it.
DeleteA tale of our times! Excellent
ReplyDeleteClick to read my FriFic
It is indeed. Thanks Keith.
DeleteWhat a waste of a holiday in paradise. My paradise would be exactly that - being cut off from the online and mobile world1
ReplyDeleteParadise to many is a 100Mbps internet connection ;-) Thanks for reading and commenting Iain.
DeleteIsn't that one of those scams they pull on older people? Either way, a good time to hang up.
ReplyDeleteGreat story. Come see mine here.
In this case it was a cross connection, but yes it was time to hang up. Thanks for reading and commenting Alice.
DeleteI did get the cross connection. :)
DeleteI ran off to the mountains literally to be away from the mobile madness. Guess this person needs to learn appreciating things other than the social media.
ReplyDeleteTrue, but some want to be connected 24X7. Thanks for reading and commenting Varad.
DeleteGood scene! I think this attitude is what folks nowadays refer to as entitlement. :)
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely right, the culture of entitlement. Thanks for your comments Christine.
DeleteOh, so funny! Unable to send pics of the food---it just doesn't get any worse than that!
ReplyDeleteOh, the cruelty of it all. Thanks for your comments Linda, I am glad you liked it.
DeleteSo lost without a net .... lovely word picture of the mindset.
ReplyDeleteAnd without google showing us the way. Thanks for your comments YS I am glad you liked it.
