Potted Plant Plot

The maestro was in his element, mumbling to himself while examining the bookshelf.   In great excitement he seized me by the coat-sleeves.

“I have been an imbecile Watson.  Observe the evidence”, his eyes glittered, “tell me that you see it too”.

“You amaze me, Holmes,” said I, “who is it?”

“The footprints on the top shelf.  The murderer was here in this room disguised as a plant “.

“How do we find him?”

“Inspector Lestrade must look for a man resembling a potted plant.”

Shelf Life

Copyright Penny Gadd

I have been a lower shelf person for all my life.  The kind that is always within easy reach.  Need company for a movie? Call me.  Want a last minute party inclusion to make up numbers? Hey I don’t mind, I know how busy you are, invites slip your mind. It happens.

You? Always at the top of the shelf and a little hard to reach but you do get around.  Spreading out in all directions, upward mostly but occasionally sending feelers down and reminding us of your presence.

Eventually you will find your way to my shelf.

Pursuit of Happiness

PHOTO PROMPT © Linda Kreger

“Contentment is natural wealth, luxury is artificial poverty.” - Socrates.

All I ever wanted was for her to be happy. I congratulated her when she announced her engagement to that wealthy financier.  She had clearly moved on after our relationship.  Some would say it was a natural end to a high school romance.

Nothing held her back.  Her widowed mother, a feisty lady who enjoyed her independent living, gave her permission to move.

But it's hard to abandon a parent who needs looking after a violent home invasion.  So she stayed.  Look at how content we are now.

Hello Fictioneers, it's been a while.  I didn't realise that I had been away that long till I saw the date of my last post.  I have missed a few by not wanting to put in a late submission but I intend to work on that and contribute more.

I'd love to read what you think about this post...

Drama Queen

PHOTO PROMPT © Ted Strutz

As a performer she was peerless.  All she needed was a willing audience and she would feed off their emotions.  Draw them in to her world where fiction and truth would tango together. She knew she was meant for a bigger stage and bided her time.

Then she met him, she knew was destined to be his queen.  As a widowed father all he needed to see was her nurturing nature to be sure.  So she played the part and spun a web so sweet and caring.

And now in the royal chamber she stands.

“Mirror, mirror on the wall.”

The Travellers

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

“Nervous?”

The gentleman in an airline uniform gives me a kind smile.   I suppose it’s on my face, this journey that I never wanted to take but am now booked to go.

“A little” I reply.

“Relax,” he says “It will be over before you know”.

I take another look at his startling green eyes in a face that is wrinkled like a prune.

I nod at the other travellers, “I expected it to be different, not such an orderly wait.”

He laughs.

“We do need to update the books.   I am Charon and I’ll be flying your craft today.”

Sole Owner

PHOTO PROMPT © Ceayr

She always looked forward going back to her house after a day of hard work.  To the welcoming blue hues and the masses of flowers in the many pots that were dotted all over the place.

The ochre coloured steps that she walked up on her return and the pristine white wooden doors that she entered to be in her own paradise.  In the evening she would bake.

It was a world far removed from the chaotic mess of her mother’s house where she grew up with her many siblings.  You know the old woman who lived in a shoe.

End Game

PHOTO PROMPT © J Hardy Carroll

She listened as the laughter of children playing reverberated outside.  A tiny smile flitted around her lips watching them play.

She hadn’t imagined such happiness a year ago.  Not since her son’s last birthday when she had stepped into her pantry only to be confronted by the sight of her husband and best friend locked in a passionate embrace.

After the shock came months of false reconciliation, continued cheating and lying.  The deception plunged her in depression till she found the strength to walk away.

She should have had done this much before and pinned the tail on the donkey.

Interrogation

PHOTO PROMPT © Rochelle Wisoff-Fields

The captors guided me blindfolded into the room.

“Take them off”, that voice, where have I heard it before?

I blinked under the harsh spotlight but I could make out a purple wraith holding a photograph.

“What do you see?” she asked.

It had to be her, the famed purple ringleader.

“Answer or I’ll gie ye a skelpit lug!“

The Scotsman? Here? Am I going to get out alive?

“Potty humour is a safe option” said the red nosed guy.

“Alright,” I screamed, “the photo has nothing to do with the story.”

Then I woke up.

But it could happen.

Have you ever wondered what it might be to write a story that does not match the photo?  Yeah, me too, especially after a few writers go missing....

Alas the limit of a hundred word leaves most of you out but I did think of you ;-)

Boundaries

PHOTO PROMPT © Jean L. Hays

It didn’t take long after the snow had melted for people start pouring in.  They said that this area would be fertile and produce enough to feed the world.

In the beginning it was enough to have your farm’s geographical boundaries stored in the central database.  But as the deluge of people continued, those markings counted for nothing.  The squatters resorting to brutal intimidation to claim more land and that’s when the electric fences became more popular.

But when the harvests failed, the land was abandoned again.  Melting the polar caps with nuclear missiles was probably not the best idea.

Finally a Friday Fiction post written on a Friday.  The thought of burying a body or few under that bleak landscape did cross the mind, but in the end I went for the mildly dystopian tale (now that's a new genre).

Melting Words

PHOTO PROMPT © Roger Bultot
There was only one reason that made me walk to Synagogue Street on Saturdays.  It wasn’t for the old Irani food joints that lined the street selling enticing kebabs and sweet chai.

It was to catch a glimpse of Esther she walked with her family to the imposing red building.  A hint of smile flitted on her lips as she walked past me.  Next Monday in school she would ask how my weekend went while I’d stammer and talk about cricket.

A lifetime later I reminisce and think of all the words I should have said to melt her heart.

I couldn't let the weekend go without contributing to the prompt.  Technically it's Monday here but being a public holiday I'll take this opportunity to slip this in.  So I dug in to the memory of a building that I'd seen in my childhood and used that as a story.  For those interested here is a link to an article about the Indian Jewish actresses who once ruled the Hindi cinema  https://www.bh.org.il/blog-items/bollywoods-jewish-superstar-actresses/
